Disinfection is handled in three stages across a patient care workflow: primary (initial), concurrent, and terminal.

Primary or initial disinfection happens early to reduce contamination as soon as possible after contact or soiling, making subsequent cleaning more effective. It focuses on lowering the microbial load to a manageable level.

Concurrent disinfection is done during the course of use or between patients to keep high-touch areas and shared surfaces under control, helping prevent cross-contamination in real time.

Terminal disinfection occurs after the patient leaves or after a procedure, with thorough cleaning and disinfection of all surfaces and equipment to reset the space for the next patient.

Other term combinations like final, interim, or beginning aren’t standard descriptors for this three-stage approach.
